Job Title:  Certified Peer Support Specialist

Responsible To:  Peer Support Supervisor

Main Function: CPSS provides structured, scheduled services that promote recovery, self-determination, self-advocacy, engagement in self-care and wellness and enhancement of community living skills of the members served.   

Qualifications:

Required:

  1. A High School Diploma or equivalent.  Must be at least 18 years old, able to read, write, follow directions, and comprehend; able to complete/pass all State mandated training.
  2. Upon hiring an individualized supervision plan shall be developed indicating the frequency of supervision by a Qualified Professional or an Associate Professional with the population served.
  3. Peer Support Specialist certification by the State of North Carolina prior to employment.

Preferred:

  1. One year experience working in the Human Service or related field or meet the above requirements scoring at least 80% or above on all State mandated trainings

General Duties/Responsibilities:

  1. Knowledge of peer support principles, values, and ethics.
  2. Ability to share lived experience to support, encourage and enhance a member’s treatment and recovery. 
  3. Possess recovery-oriented skills and knowledge to provide peer support services.
  4.  Ability to collaborate with the program QP to assess their own strengths and areas of growth and develop a supervision plan. 
  5. Ability to collaborate with a member to explore and identify barriers to accessing community resources or treatment providers. 
  6. Ability to model and mentor recovery values, attitudes, beliefs, and personal actions to encourage wellness and resilience for beneficiaries served and to promote a recovery environment in the community, residence, and workplace. 
  7. Ability to explore with a member served, the importance and creation of a wellness identity through open sharing and challenging viewpoints. 
  8. Ability to promote a member’s opportunity for personal growth by identifying teachable moments for building relationship skills to empower the member and enhance personal responsibility.
  9. Ability to model and share decision-making tools to enhance a member’s healthy decision-making process.
  10. Ability to provide examples of healthy social interactions and facilitate familiarity with, and connection to, the local community.
  11. Ability to recognize and appropriately respond to conditions that constitute an emergency to include both physical and behavioral health crisis utilizing the emergency response procedure of One to One with Youth, Inc.
  12.  Ability to provide support to the member in navigating systems (medical, social services, or legal).
  13. Ability to promote self-advocacy by facilitating each member’s learning about his or her human and legal rights and supporting the member while exercising those rights to support the empowerment of the member.
  14. Establishes a caring, therapeutic relationship with consumers.  Provides appropriate rehabilitative, socialization, community, and personal skills training to assist the individual with reaching Person Centered Plan outcomes, while ensuring consumer’s safety, health and well-being are maintained.
  15. Correctly implements Person Centered Plans, including participating with the consumer during activities in the community.
  16. Demonstrates an understanding of consumer rights and confidentiality and ensures these rights are protected.
  17. Understands communication techniques/strategies to support consumer.
  18. Participates in Person Centered Plan development and maintaining a therapeutic living environment for members when applicable.
  19. Provides transportation for members as defined in the Person Centered Plan.  Must meet applicable Liability Insurance Requirements.
  20. Maintain a valid North Carolina Driver’s License, acceptable criminal record and Health Registry Check that adheres to standard of employment.
  21. Demonstrates knowledge of One to One with Youth’s policies and procedures defined in the employee handbook.
  22. Completes documentation as required.  Records accurate and informative notes which reflect treatment goals.  Writes legibly.
  23. Accurately and correctly documents:                          
    1. Document daily progress notes.
    2. Complete time sheets weekly.
    3. Communicate effectively with Qualified Professional
  24. Completes minimal training requirements.  Attends all training sessions as required by the agency.
  25. All other duties as deemed necessary.
