Job Title: Certified Peer Support Specialist (North Carolina)

Position Summary
The Certified Peer Support Specialist provides recovery-oriented support services to individuals receiving outpatient behavioral health and/or substance use treatment. Drawing on lived experience, this role promotes hope, empowerment, and self-determination while helping individuals navigate recovery resources, engage in treatment, and build community connections. The Peer Support Specialist also assists with community outreach, group facilitation, and basic health services such as rapid STI testing (as permitted by training and certification).
Key Responsibilities
Provide one-on-one peer support to individuals in recovery, using lived experience to inspire hope and model recovery-oriented behaviors
Assist individuals in developing and achieving personal recovery goals and wellness plans
Facilitate peer-led support groups in community settings
Provide education on harm reduction, recovery pathways, and wellness strategies
Link individuals to community resources including housing, employment, healthcare, and social services
Support individuals in navigating systems of care (behavioral health, medical, legal, and social services)
Perform rapid STI testing in accordance with training, protocols, and state regulations; provide pre- and post-test education and referrals
Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with agency policies and state guidelines
Uphold confidentiality and ethical standards in all interactions
Advocate for person-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care
Qualifications
Current North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) credential in good standing
At least 18 months of lived experience in recovery from mental health and/or substance use challenges
High school diploma or GED required
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work effectively with diverse populations
Basic computer skills and ability to complete documentation in electronic health records
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation preferred
