Certified Peer Support Specialist (IMMEDIATE HIRE)

Grant-Funded Position
Greater Outreach Services, Inc. is seeking qualified Certified Peer Support Specialists to provide full-time peer support services within the Greensboro Detention Center and High Point Detention Center. This is a grant-funded position supporting individuals involved in the justice system who are receiving or connected to Medication Assisted Treatment services.
Position Overview
The Certified Peer Support Specialist will use lived experience, recovery knowledge, and professional peer support skills to assist individuals with substance use and co-occurring needs while they are detained and during their transition back into the community. The role focuses on engagement, recovery support, relapse prevention, reentry planning, linkage to community resources, and continued support after release.
This position requires professionalism, strong boundaries, flexibility, and the ability to work collaboratively with detention center staff, behavioral health providers, community partners, and the Greater Outreach Services team.

Applicants may be assigned to one primary location or may be asked to assist across locations based on program needs.
Schedule
This is a full-time position. Schedule is flexible based on detention center access, participant needs, program requirements, and agency approval. Some flexibility may be required to support appointments, reentry planning, community linkage, and follow-up services.
Key Responsibilities
The Certified Peer Support Specialist will:
- Provide peer support services to individuals receiving or connected to Medication Assisted Treatment.
- Build rapport with participants through lived-experience mentorship, encouragement, and recovery-focused support.
- Assist participants with identifying personal recovery goals, barriers, strengths, and support needs.
- Support relapse prevention planning, coping skill development, and recovery maintenance.
- Assist with reentry and discharge planning prior to release.
- Provide linkage and warm referrals to community-based MAT providers, behavioral health services, outpatient treatment, housing resources, employment resources, transportation support, primary care, food/basic needs, and recovery support networks.
- Coordinate with detention center staff, Guilford County Sheriff’s Office representatives, community providers, and Greater Outreach Services leadership.
- Participate in required trainings provided or approved through the program.
- Complete required documentation accurately and on time.
- Track participant contacts, referrals, outcomes, and follow-up information as required.
- Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical standards at all times.
- Provide post-release follow-up support, including check-ins, appointment reminders, barrier resolution, treatment engagement support, and recovery goal reinforcement.
Required Qualifications
- Must be a Certified Peer Support Specialist in North Carolina.
- Must have lived experience with recovery and the ability to use that experience appropriately and professionally to support others.
- Experience working with individuals with substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health needs, or justice-involved populations preferred.
- Must be able to work in a detention center setting.
- Must be able to pass all required background checks, screenings, interviews, and detention center clearance requirements.
- Must be willing to participate in a panel interview and any required meeting or approval process with the Sheriff’s Office.
- Must have strong communication, documentation, time management, and teamwork skills.
- Must demonstrate professionalism, reliability, emotional maturity, and cultural humility.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality and follow all agency, detention center, and grant-related requirements.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with Medication Assisted Treatment support.
- Experience providing peer support in jail, prison, reentry, behavioral health, or community-based settings.
- Knowledge of relapse prevention, recovery planning, crisis support, harm reduction, community resources, and reentry barriers.
- Experience working with diverse populations, including individuals facing housing instability, unemployment, trauma, legal involvement, and treatment access barriers.
