General Position Description:
Position requires a NC Certified Peer Support Specialist Certification
General Position Description: Under general supervision provides activities that are individualized, recovery-focused service that allows individuals the opportunity to learn to manage their own recovery and advocacy process or any other service assigned by the supervisor. Interventions of Peer Support Specialists serve to enhance the development of natural supports, as well as coping and self-management skills. Interventions of Peer Support Specialists may also provide supportive services to assist an individual in the community, transportation of individuals, crisis response (24/7/365), and provision of both group and individual peer support and other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Preferred and Minimum Position Qualifications: NC Certified Peer Support Specialists (or eligible for certification pending required training and work experience within 6 months of hire) must:
- Self-identify as an individual with the life experience of being diagnosed with a serious mental illness or substance abuse diagnosis.
- Demonstrate at least one full year in his/her own life without crisis, relapse, or psychiatric inpatient treatment, substance abuse inpatient treatment, or criminal justice involvement.
- Be currently in recovery and stable
- Have a high school diploma or GED equivalency.
- Be supervised by a Qualified Professional.
Provide Peer Support to only non-family members.
- Certification as a WRAP facilitator or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
- At a minimum, the individual must meet the NC Division of MH/DD/SA requirements for Paraprofessional and certification as a Peer Support Specialist
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- At least one (1) year of experience in delivering MH/DD/SA services. Credit may be given for previous experience in other job positions, practicums, and internships as this experience relate to the provision of crisis services.
