LOCATION: 2819 Chapel Hill Rd, Durham, NC 27707
STATUS: Temporary Full-time – as-needed (weather dependent) – 11/1/2024 - 3/31/2025
Note: this shelter will only operate on White Flag nights (temps below 32 degrees or below 37 with
precipitation); staff need to be flexible to adjust schedule on at least a 3-4 day time period
COMPENSATION: $25-28 per hour
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor of Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Human
Services, ore similar degree preferred. High School Diploma required. Peer Support Specialists,
BIPOC applicants, and bi-lingual applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: Combined at least 1 year experience working and/or volunteering
in human services, with emphasis in vulnerable populations preferred. Working with people
experiencing homelessness is a plus.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The essential functions include but are not limited to:
• Assist with intake/exit process, interviews, screenings, and record keeping for overnight
Winter Warming Shelter and diversion as deemed necessary.
• Maintain a safe, supportive, trauma-informed environment in the shelter.
• Create and maintain a safe shelter space for guests and staff, including use of proper
sanitation procedures.
• Support and encourage guests while assisting to follow shelter routines and procedures,
especially as relating to sanitizing of sleeping areas.
• Help guests to work through any conflict that may arise during stay and intervene if
necessary to maintain safe and peaceful environment. Call for assistance from Shelter
Manager or Director as needed.
• Keep shelter clean, restocked and up to standards based on city/state regulations.
• Communicate observations and interactions with guests to shelter manager verbally or
written report as needed.
• Participate in program meetings and relevant trainings, as required.
• Adhere to agency policy, procedures and professional code of ethics. (See manual.)
• Complete all duties as assigned and required.

SKILLS REQUIRED:
Ability to offer hospitality and welcome to a diverse population. Must display sensitivity to
differences in culture, religion, sexual orientation, race, age, and physical and mental illness.
Ability to maintain clear personal and professional boundaries. Ability to work effectively in
constantly changing and sometimes demanding or chaotic environment.
Ability to remain alert and on duty throughout shifts. Ability to respond responsibly in emergency
and crisis situations. This is an awake overnight position.
Ability to communicate well both orally and in written form and to follow detailed instructions.
