Position Title: Peer Support Specialist
Department/Program: Veterans Services of the Carolinas (VSC) (HOPE/PATH/TCL)
Reports To: Program Director—Outreach
Location: 1845 Brevard Road Arden, North Carolina 28704
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Work Schedule: Full-time position requiring flexibility, including evenings, weekends,
travel, public events, emergency response coordination, and participation
in community meetings and veteran outreach activities as needed.
Compensation: Hourly rate commensurate with education and experience.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Peer Support Specialist for Healing Outreach Partnerships for Empowerment (HOPE), Projects for
Assistance in Transitioning from Homelessness (PATH), and TCL programs provides outreach, engagement,
peer support, and resource coordination for veterans and individuals experiencing homelessness, behavioral
health challenges, substance use disorders, housing instability, and related life challenges. Using lived
experience and recovery-oriented practices, this position promotes wellness, recovery, housing stability, and
engagement with healthcare, behavioral health, and supportive-service systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Outreach & Community Engagement
Conduct outreach and engagement activities with veterans and individuals experiencing
homelessness, behavioral health challenges, substance use disorders, and housing instability
Build trusting relationships through trauma-informed and recovery-oriented approaches
Participate in street outreach, shelter outreach, encampment engagement, and community-based
service-delivery efforts
Represent ABCCM and VSC at outreach activities, collaborative meetings, and community events
Peer Support & Recovery Services
Provide peer support, mentorship, encouragement, and recovery-oriented guidance using lived
experience
Assist participants in strengthening coping skills, recovery engagement, self-advocacy, and
community integration
Encourage participation in healthcare, behavioral health, housing, recovery, and supportive-service
programs
Support continuity of care and participant stabilization during periods of transition or crisis
Resource Linkage & Care Coordination
Assist in identifying participant needs related to housing, employment, healthcare, behavioral health
services, transportation, benefits, and community support systems
Coordinate referrals and linkage to healthcare providers, behavioral health agencies, VA services,
shelters, housing organizations, and community resources
Maintain working knowledge of community resources, eligibility requirements, referral processes,
and support systems
Collaborate with case managers, outreach teams, healthcare providers, and community partners to
support participant goals
Documentation & Compliance
Maintain timely, accurate, and complete documentation of outreach activities, participant
interactions, referrals, and service-coordination activities
Utilize databases, reporting platforms, and information systems as required
Maintain compliance with confidentiality standards, grant requirements, and organizational policies
and procedures
Team Collaboration & Ministry Support
Collaborate with outreach teams, healthcare providers, behavioral health agencies, shelters,
churches, volunteers, and community organizations
Participate in meetings, supervision, training activities, interdisciplinary coordination, and ministry
initiatives
Develop and strengthen volunteer and church participation
Promote ABCCM's mission and values and perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
Current North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist certification required
Veteran status preferred; familiarity with veteran services and military culture preferred
High school diploma or GED required; additional education in human services, behavioral health, or
related field preferred
Experience in outreach services, homelessness programs, behavioral health support, recovery
services, or related field preferred
Experience working with veterans preferred
Strong computer, documentation, and database-entry skills preferred
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS
Work requires regular travel, operation of a motor vehicle, walking throughout community environments,
participation in outreach activities, and use of standard office equipment and reporting systems. The position
may involve exposure to inclement weather, environmental hazards, crisis situations, and emotionally complex
service environments requiring flexibility, sound judgment, and professional composure.
MENTAL DEMANDS
Must be able to manage outreach responsibilities, participant engagement activities, crisis situations,
documentation requirements, and community-coordination efforts simultaneously. Requires effective
communication, problem-solving, emotional resilience, and sound judgment. Must maintain professionalism,
appropriate boundaries, and composure while working with vulnerable populations experiencing
homelessness, trauma, behavioral health challenges, and other complex life circumstances.
