GreenTree Peer Support is a peer-run nonprofit organization dedicated to building recovery, wellness, and community for people with lived experience of mental health and substance use challenges. Our programs and spaces are grounded in mutual support, connection, and empowerment.
Position Summary
The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) uses their lived experience of recovery to inspire hope, promote self-advocacy, and support others in achieving their own recovery goals. Peer Support Specialists serve as role models, connectors, and companions on the recovery journey—offering one-on-one and group-based support that centers mutuality and respect. The PSS contributes to a welcoming, inclusive environment at GreenTree and plays an important role in shaping and sustaining our peer community.
Key Responsibilities
Peer Support and Relationship Building
- Provide one-on-one peer support, mentoring, and recovery coaching to members.
- Facilitate or co-facilitate peer-led support groups, workshops, and community activities.
- Share your own lived experience appropriately to offer encouragement, hope, and support.
- Support guests in identifying personal strengths, goals, and self-directed recovery paths.
- Support members by using opportunities to provide connection through transportation as a tool to develop peer to peer relationships.
- Build trusting, mutual relationships grounded in respect, empathy, and confidentiality.
- Promote an inclusive, trauma-informed, and person-centered environment.
- Promote values associated with harm reduction
Program Support and Community Engagement
- Assist in planning and delivering GreenTree’s peer-led programming.
- Participate in community outreach, engagement, and events that connect people to GreenTree’s services.
- Help maintain welcoming, trauma aware, organized community spaces and ensure safety and accessibility for all.
- Support data collection and documentation in alignment with grant and program requirements.
- Collaborate with other staff to ensure smooth daily operations and member support.
- Any other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Director of Programs
Advocacy and Systems Change
- Empower peers to build self-advocacy skills and navigate community resources.
- Promote the values of recovery and peer leadership in the broader behavioral health system.
- Contribute to discussions and decision-making that reflect the voices of lived experience.
- Maintain an current NCCPSS certification.
- Take personal responsibility for continuing education.
Qualifications
Required:
- Certification (or eligibility) as a North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist (NCCPSS).
- Commitment to the values of recovery, mutual support, and self-determination.
- Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
- Basic computer and documentation skills (email, data entry, digital communication).
- Reliable, self-motivated, able to maintain confidentiality, NCCPSS ethics, and appropriate boundaries and confidentiality.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed, harm reduction, and person-centered approaches.
Preferred:
- Experience working or volunteering in a peer-run, recovery-oriented, or community-based setting.
- Experience facilitating groups, outreach, or community engagement activities.

Work Environment & Schedule
- Primarily on-site role depending on program needs.
- Some evening or weekend hours may be required for groups or community events.
- Collaborative and supportive work environment rooted in recovery values.

Compensation & Benefits
- Hourly rate: $17-19 commensurate with experience.
- Benefits may include health, dental, PTO, professional development, etc.
