Job Summary
Provides peer-based recovery support services to individuals with mental health and/or substance use challenges. Drawing on their lived experience of recovery, the Peer Support Specialist builds trust with peers, supports them in identifying their strengths and goals, and helps them navigate recovery resources. This position requires a deep understanding of peer support values, ethics, and boundaries, with an emphasis on person-centered care, recovery-oriented strategies, and crisis intervention.
Education and Experience:
- Required level of education: High School Diploma or GED required.
- Certification: NC Certified Peer Support Specialist Training and Certification.
- Preferred years of experience: Lived experience of recovery from mental health or substance use challenges, with at least one year of sustained recovery. Prior experience in a peer support role preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong understanding of peer support principles, including person-centered care, mutual respect, and self-determination.
- Proficiency in de-escalation techniques and managing peer crises in a calm, supportive manner.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust with diverse populations.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards in peer relationships.
