Job Summary:
The Peer Support Specialist provides essential support and advocacy for individuals with behavioral health needs enrolled in Medicaid services. This role is pivotal in fostering resilience, enhancing self-management skills, and supporting recovery goals through the Medicaid Peer Support Program. The Peer Support Specialist uses their lived experience to empower individuals, promote wellness, and facilitate engagement with community resources, while upholding ethical standards and cultural competency.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide Peer Support:
- - Build rapport with individuals by sharing relevant lived experiences to foster hope and trust.
- - Develop one-on-one and group sessions tailored to individuals' recovery goals and Medicaid requirements.
- - Assist individuals in identifying and overcoming personal obstacles in the journey toward recovery.
Advocacy and Navigation:
- - Provide guidance on accessing Medicaid benefits, mental health services, and community resources.
- - Support individuals in advocating for themselves within healthcare settings, ensuring their voices are heard and respected.
- - Assist with connecting to housing, vocational, educational, and social services to promote comprehensive community engagement.
Promote Skills and Self-Efficacy:
- - Teach coping skills, symptom management, and strategies for navigating daily life challenges.
- - Facilitate wellness activities, including mindfulness, stress management, and self-care, in line with recovery-oriented practices.
- - Encourage individuals to set and work towards their personal recovery and wellness goals.
Documentation and Reporting:
- - Maintain accurate and timely documentation of interactions, progress notes, and changes in individuals' recovery needs in accordance with Medicaid policies.
- - Complete required assessments, service plans, and outcome reports, ensuring all documentation aligns with NC Medicaid's standards.
- - Report any safety concerns or critical incidents to supervisory staff immediately and follow the organization’s protocols.
Coordinate with Healthcare Providers:
- - Participate in interdisciplinary meetings to provide insights on the individual’s progress and recovery needs.
- - Foster collaboration with other healthcare providers, ensuring that the individual’s voice and recovery goals are integrated into the care plan.
- - Respectfully mediate any misunderstandings between the individual and the healthcare team to foster mutual understanding and support.
Group Facilitation:
- - Lead recovery-focused peer support groups, drawing on lived experience to facilitate discussions and encourage mutual support.
- - Plan and coordinate group activities that reinforce skills, self-esteem, and community integration, adapting sessions to individual needs and Medicaid program guidelines.
Qualifications:
Certification:
- - Completion of North Carolina's Peer Support Specialist Training and Certification, or equivalent certification approved by NC Medicaid.
- - Additional training in trauma-informed care, mental health first aid, or crisis intervention is beneficial.
Experience:
- - Lived experience in managing mental health or substance use challenges with a demonstrated recovery history.
- - Previous experience in a peer support or similar role, preferably within a Medicaid or healthcare setting.
Skills:
- - Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to connect empathically.
- - Knowledgeable in recovery-oriented, person-centered, and trauma-informed practices.
- - Basic computer skills for documentation and reporting, with the ability to learn electronic health record (EHR) systems.
