Full-Time Employment Opportunity: Peer Navigator

Jubilee Home, located in the Historic Hayti neighborhood in Durham, NC, works to create safe, trauma-informed spaces that allow individuals the opportunity to show up authentically, step into bravery, and open the door for healing and transformation. Inspired by SAMHSA’s 8 Dimensions of Wellness, Jubilee Home takes a holistic approach to support individuals as they seek sustainable independence and joyful liberation. Through peer-led case management, weekly wellness programming, and a therapeutic physical environment, Jubilee Home seeks to be a haven for those impacted by the criminal legal system. 

As Jubilee Home expands to support justice-involved women, our Peer Navigators are key to this mission, offering a source of wisdom, connection, and support for residents rooted in the expertise of their own lived experience and healing. From resident check-ins to weekly wellness programming, peer navigators are integral in the daily operations of Jubilee Home, working in close collaboration with fellow peers and admin staff to create a therapeutic environment rooted in kindness, vulnerability, compassion and care. This role requires a high level of maturity, integrity, professionalism, and commitment to personal wellness and growth. 

Description of Duties and Responsibilities: 

Residents - 

● Affirm the dignity and worth of each resident without judgment or discrimination based on their convictions, racial identity, gender identity, sexual orientation, faith practices, diagnosis, crimes, experiences, and/or other differences 

● Regularly engage with residents by providing insight into community resources and previous lived experience. Guide, coach and encourage each resident to take responsibility for and actively participate in their own wellness, reentry process, and if applicable recovery 

● Work within the team setting to offer direct support and to create actionable plans for each resident, ensuring all staff are on the same page and resident support is consistent 

● Coordinate with peer team to ensure effective service utilization amongst residents in regards to physical and mental health, substance use, employment, life skills, and any other community supports a resident may need or desire 

● Utilize creative and supportive intervention strategies to assist individuals in navigating personal and systemic barriers (motivational interviewing, mindfulness, walk and talks, SMART goals, etc) ● Support staff in creating, facilitating, and supporting responsive and appropriate in-house programming for residents as needed 

● Utilize conflict resolution strategies with residents to diffuse stressors and/or conflicts within the house (i.e. mediation, restorative circle practices, de-escalation and/or other strategies)

Environment - 

● Take an active part in creating a therapeutic living environment, championing harm reduction strategies, and demonstrating a commitment to personal healthy living 

● Work with peer team in daily operations, including but not limited to: ensuring smooth intakes, referrals, and discharge of residents; managing fees for services; maintaining regular room checks, property inventories, urinalysis, chore duties, etc 

● Support peer team with effective and consistent implementation of Jubilee Home guidelines 

● Demonstrate a commitment to a clean environment, including a willingness to fill in gaps in the chores procedures 

● Support organizational operations at all Jubilee Home properties, collaborating regularly with all female, male, and nonbinary staff, residents, volunteers, interns, and programming partners 

Community - 

● Willingness to assist unhoused community members and former residents outside of Jubilee Home with appropriate resources and linkage to services as capacity allows 

● Host Jubilee Home volunteers and community partners for periodic engagement opportunities ● Attend relevant community meetings, events, and speaking engagements to build relationships with larger peer and service provider networks 

Professional Obligations - 

● Work collaboratively with administrative staff to implement best practices in service delivery, including analyzing current programs and procedures and staying up to date on the latest developments in the fields of transitional housing, substance use, mental health, and reentry 

● Work closely with administrative and peer staff to execute programming needs, including weekly community dinners, recovery meetings, wellness groups, and prosocial events 

● Work with staff to ensure scheduling provides appropriate house coverage, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Flexibility and dependability are musts. 

● Track and document all interactions with residents, maintaining regular case management records and contact notes 

● Attend weekly staff meetings and training opportunities 

● Attend regular individual and group supervision with Director of Support Services and peer team ● Engage in ongoing professional development opportunities (i.e. certifications, conferences, and trainings) 

● Maintain the professional standards as defined by the North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist Program’s guiding values and code of ethics 

Education and Skills: 

● NC Certified Peer Support Specialist (certification-in-progress also considered) 

● Personal experience living with justice involvement, incarceration, substance use disorder, and/or mental health 

● Previous experience in a professional setting in a Peer Support capacity 

● Capable communicator who is comfortable working within a team setting to facilitate consistent support for residents between staff members 

● Ability to navigate Google Suite (gmail, drive, calendar, etc) 

● Must have a valid state issued ID 

● Basic knowledge of Durham and local resources preferred 

● Ability to physically navigate stairs and occasionally lift light to medium weights of up to 20 pounds ● Self-starter who can problem solve on the fly and step in where needed 

● Reliable, and flexible team player who is self-motivated, has a good work ethic, and can set and maintain personal boundaries. 

● Willingness to learn Jubilee Home’s organizational culture and adapt accordingly 

● Interest in building something great, sustainable, and long term at Jubilee Home 

● Ability to maintain confidentiality of residents and stakeholders 

● Previous experience and/or interest in group facilitation support 

● Demonstrate the ability to work with sensitive subjects with tact and diplomacy 

● Communication, interpersonal, and emotional intelligence skills with self awareness of your own triggers and biases and how those might affect your ability to support residents 

● Ongoing, consistent engagement in resources, services, and/or relationships that promote personal healthy living and wellness for yourself 

Compensation: 

● This is a full-time position (35 hrs/week). Salary begins at $43,000 in addition to health, vision, dental, and life insurance, a 10% employer matching retirement plan, and a YMCA membership. 

● Three weeks paid vacation per year, in addition to sick leave, paid maternity/paternity leave, and a one month paid sabbatical every seven years.
