Position Summary
The Peer Support Specialist uses their own lived experience with recovery from substance use, mental health challenges, or both to support, mentor, and empower individuals on their recovery journey. This role promotes hope, encourages self-advocacy, and helps clients build the skills and support networks needed for long-term recovery. Peer Support Specialists work as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver trauma-informed, person-centered services.
Key Responsibilities
Peer Support & Mentorship
- Build trusting, supportive relationships with participants based on shared lived experience.
- Provide emotional support, encouragement, and guidance to individuals in recovery.
- Assist participants in developing and practicing coping techniques, recovery strategies, and wellness plans.
- Support clients in identifying and achieving personal recovery goals.
Advocacy & Empowerment
- Encourage self-advocacy, informed decision-making, and personal responsibility.
- Help clients navigate community resources, social services, and recovery supports.
- Advocate for client needs within the program and community when appropriate.
Recovery Support Services
- Facilitate or co-facilitate peer support groups, workshops, and recovery activities.
- Assist clients in accessing housing, employment, education, healthcare, and social supports.
- Accompany clients to appointments, court dates, or community services when appropriate and approved.
Documentation & Communication
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation in accordance with agency policies.
- Communicate client progress and concerns to the treatment team while upholding ethical boundaries.
- Participate in team meetings, case reviews, and staff trainings.
Program & Community Engagement
- Serve as a positive role model for recovery and wellness.
- Help create a welcoming, inclusive, and recovery-oriented program environment.
- Participate in outreach efforts and community events that promote recovery services.
Qualifications
Required
- Lived experience with substance use or mental health recovery and at least 1 year of sustained recovery.
- Willingness to share personal recovery experiences appropriately and professionally.
- Peer Support certification (e.g., CPRS, CPSS, CRSS) or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Valid driver’s license (if transporting clients) and ability to pass background checks per program requirements.
Preferred
- Experience working or volunteering in a recovery or behavioral health setting.
- Knowledge of recovery principles, harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and community resources.
- Strong communication, active listening, and boundary-setting skills.
Working Conditions
- Work may take place in office, residential, community, or field settings.
- Some evening or weekend hours may be required depending on program needs.
- Occasional travel for client support or community outreach.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds if needed.
