Peer Support Specialists are people living in recovery with mental illness and / or substance use disorder and who provide support to others whom can benefit from their lived experiences. The North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist Program provides acknowledgment that the peer has met a set of requirements necessary to provide support to individuals with mental health or substance use disorder.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist clients with self-determination and decision-making
  • Educational skills (managing finances, health care, daily living, etc.).
  • Model recovery values, attitudes, beliefs, and personal action to encourage wellness
  • Promote self-advocacy and empower clients to use their legal rights
  • Provide linkage to community resources
  • Participate in team meetings
  • Maintain and submit required documentation (treatment plans, service notes, etc.)
  • Able to attend monthly meetings/ Supervision
  • Advocating for people in recovery.
  • Sharing resources and building skills.
  • Building community and relationships.
