RCC DROP-IN CENTER PEER SUPPORT SPECIALIST
JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Purpose/Role

The CPSS provides peer support and resource navigation to engaging participants . This person uses their personal lived experiences to connect with participants and to act as an example of wellness. As someone who has successfully managed her/his own recovery, the PSS provides an example to program participants of what they can strive for in their own recovery. 

 

Responsibilities/Tasks

 

Participant Engagement and Support

  • Greet and check-in with participants as they come into the Drop-In Center.
  • Meet with the RCC Coordinator daily to be assigned a station for the day.
  • Provide one-on-one and communal peer support interactions.
  • Complete opening and closing housekeeping duties as assigned.
  • Use motivational interviewing when attempting to engage individuals.
  • PSS will attempt to establish a supportive relationship and assess the individual’s readiness/motivation to participate in recovery and/or harm reduction activities. Utilizing Motivational Interview techniques help guide persons from Precontemplation phase towards Contemplation/Action
  • Follow-up with the identified individual within 24 hours of referral (or as soon as can be arranged). 
  • Provide health care, legal, and behavioral health system navigation
  • Facilitate both in-person and/or hybrid groups and provide training that will focus on learning about the addiction model and gaining recovery and social skills.
  • If the individual is willing, the PSS will guide the individual in the development of a Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP). 
  • Document and maintain participant information in the database.
  • Gather information needed to build a relationship and maintain follow up, including contact information and potential barriers to accessing care.
  • Provide basic education about healthy behaviors, health-related risk behaviors, available care and treatment options.
  • Involve participants and their support systems (e.g. family, caregiver) in the decision-making process through a person-centered, collaborative approach.
  • Act as a participant advocate and navigator to support the development of problem-solving skills.
  • Coordinate care for participants enrolled in other provider programs as needed.
  • Provide participant family support and care coordination (w/permission & request from participant).

 

 

Competencies/Knowledge/Qualities

  • Demonstrated commitment to the Sunrise mission, vision, and values.
  • Professional and personal style consistent with the philosophy and team-oriented culture of Sunrise.
  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
  • Knowledge and experience in the peer support field.
  • One year of experience in the behavioral health and/or substance use fields
  • Strong communication skills - verbal and written
  • Appropriate personal & professional boundaries.
  • Experience with Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) and applicable skills
  • Experience with direct patient contact and/or customer service
  • Experience in the criminal justice system (either educationally, or personally).
  • 2 years of personal recovery (mental health and/or substance use/abuse).
  • Maintain healthy self-care and work balance.

Requirements: 

  • Maintain healthy self-care and work balance. 
  • Maintain peer support certification with North Carolina and all required CEU hours needed for recertification. 
  • Abide by PSS Code of Ethics.
