What is a Certified Peer Support Specialist?

A Peer Support Specialist assists individuals in recovery who struggle with wellness related to substance use and/or mental health challenges through their own lived experience.

**Eligible candidates for this position must be certified by the NC Peer Support Specialist Board.

What is a Certified Peer Support Specialist Supervisor?

A Peer Support Specialist Supervisor assists Peers and Individuals in recovery in establishing and maintaining positive relationships with community resources who assist individuals with resources related to reduction of substance use and/or increased access to mental health resources.

A Day in the Life of a Peer Support Specialist can look like:

  • Working one-on-one or in a group setting providing community-based services
  • Coordinating with person(s) served to assist with achieving goals related to their life challenges with recovery, housing, employment, social skills, educational skills, community inclusion, coping skills, symptom management, medical needs, etc.
  • Educating and training of clients and others who have a legitimate role in addressing the client's needs/goals
  • Educating and linking client to needed resources, services, benefits, and activities within the community
  • Assistance and support with client skill enhancement, ongoing treatment, and functional gains
  • Developing interpersonal and community relational skills, including adaptation to home, school, work
  • Therapeutic mentoring and supportive counseling
  • Symptom monitoring and self-management of symptoms
  • Monitoring service provision
  • Daily community living skill building

The Peer Support Specialist will be responsible for required documentation as evidence of services rendered.

  • NC Peer Support Certification
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Peer support Supervisor training or equivalent (for Supervisor position)
  • Valid Driver License
  • Social Security Card
  • Automotive insurance
  • Car Registration
  • Current TB Test
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Other Documentation required by PHSNC

Salary: $18.00 - $30.00 per hour
